OUR CLASSES

The GLS Seattle offers Saturday classes for children and adults. Learners are placed considering several factors, including language ability, age, and grade level. Come visit our school on Saturday for a free trial class.

Grundstufe

The class for our youngest students (ages 5-8) teaches German in a playful way. Students explore topics through song, story, play, movement, as well as arts and crafts. The class emphasizes the spoken language, but students also learn to read and write simple words at their level. They acquire knowledge about cultural traditions in German-speaking countries through specific events and activities.

Oberstufe I

This class is geared towards students in middle school (ages 11-14) with intermediate to advanced knowledge of German. Students learn to maintain a fluent conversation in German about everyday topics, and they enhance their reading and writing skills through more complex texts. Students also explore contemporary culture in German-speaking countries through songs, movies, and other media. Students may take the National German Exam (Level 2) and the Internationale Vergleichsarbeit (Level A2).

Anfänger

This class is intended for students with beginner knowledge of German. The spoken language plays a predominant role in this class, but students also expand their reading and writing skills. They learn about cultural traditions in German-speaking countries through specific events and activities.

Oberstufe II

This class is geared towards students (ages 12 and up) in middle and high school with advanced knowledge of German. Students explore the German language through different and complex types of texts as well as audio and video materials. All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are strengthened, and emphasis is placed on reproductive oral and written language skills in preparation for exams. Students explore contemporary culture in German-speaking countries through songs, movies, and other media. Students may take the National German Exam (Level 3 and 4) and the Deutsche Sprachdiplom (Level I and II).

Mittelstufe

This class is intended for students (ages 9-12) in elementary and middle school with intermediate to advanced knowledge of German. Both the spoken and written language receive attention in this class, and students expand their reading and writing skills. They learn about cultural traditions in German-speaking countries through specific events and activities. Students may take the National German Exam (Level 1) and the Internationale Vergleichsarbeit (Level A1).

Adult Classes

The Beginner Adult Class is designed for students with no or little German language skills. Classes meet virtually on weekday early evenings TBD.

 

The Intermediate Adult Class is designed for students who have taken German in the past and who can communicate at a basic level. Classes meet in-person on Saturday mornings.

 

Students in both classes acquire  communication, reading, and writing skills at their respective levels. They also learn about the culture, history, and geography in German-speaking countries.
